Developing A Modeling Orientation to Science

Over the last four years, middle school science teachers in Maine have changed the way that ‘models’ and ‘modeling' are taught. Instead of copying diagrams, students are leaving the classroom to answer new questions about a changing world. Working with professional scientists from the community, they have collected data on tick populations, invasive crabs, and more. Out short film, made in collaboration with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, demonstrates how this new, more active curriculum has increased student engagement and learning, both in and out of the classroom.
